If I’d amassed a share of the Rolling Stones pension pot, alleged to amount to £1bn, it might have been more obvious what my wife saw in me.
As it is, however, the last 14 years have not only been the happiest of my life: they have also brought me a level of financial security I have never known – owing, in large part, to sharing my life for the first time with a wife with whom it is possible to talk and plan sensibly about money.
I've been a lurker here for some time, and I've seen some great advice given out. I found out that my 17 (18 in 6 months) year old daughter is dating a 25 year old guy that she had previously only been friends with, and Im not sure how to handle this.
First off, my Daughter is a smart, funny, mature, independent girl with a lot of friends and who does very well in school, and is preparing for college next year. She broke up with her last boyfriend (who was her age) because he always had drama going on around him, and unlike a lot of teenagers I know, she hates drama. ) Daughter met him some months ago when her friend got her uncle (The Guy) to drive them to the mall.
Since then, he has driven their coed group of friends around town to movies and such on occasion for some months now.
This whole time, Ive been constantly asking why is a 25 year old guy ok with hanging out with a group of 17-18 year olds? But Daughter said that Guy doesnt drink and all his friends do, and he doesnt like to hang out with a bunch of drunk people. By now, Ive met Guy a few times and he actually seems like a nice person. Her dad and I (We are divorced, but try to keep a united front in the raising of the kids) found out they have been dating for a while and are possibly having sex.
Online dating stats bare out that average joes are just as enamored with younger women as their famous counterparts.
Each example disgusts me anew in a way that’s probably not entirely defensible: I think I might be angrier about these couples than I am about a good many important political issues.
I know, I know: Why care that two consenting adults are canoodling when a demagogue is about to take the White House?
(Donald Trump, for the record, is 24 years older than his wife Melania, and each time he’s gotten married, it’s been to a younger woman.
The fact that he looked like a sack of wet sawdust and had the conversational talents of a clogged drain did not seem to come into the reckoning. The same woman had once told me “Money is what women care about most of all” and, while she was obviously speaking for herself, she may also have been voicing the general approach to sex and marriage of a certain category of womanhood.
Felix Dennis, the near-billionaire publisher who recently died, negotiated many decades with women on an emotionless calculation of their material interests.
I cant change whats already happened; I just want to find the right way to deal with it and move on. Shes always had her head on straight, I dont think for a second she would allow anyone to pressure her into anything she didnt want to do, and Ive always believed she is WAY more sensible than I was at that age. He also said that he would do anything he could possibly do to show that he really cares for her. He has refused many times to even meet the Guy when he thought they were just friends, and now has labeled Guy a sick pervert.
